ICA Indonesian Cultural Night 2005,Dunedin 23 July 2005
Indonesian Community Association (ICA) held an Indonesian Cultural Night at Castle 1 lecture theatre, University of Otago on the 23rd July 2005. This is ICA's first event and the first Indonesian cultural night in Dunedin.
The purpose of this event was to introduce Indonesian culture to the Dunedin community. The event comprised of traditional dances, gamelan performances conducted by Mr. Djoko Susilo, fashion show, contemporary dance, and a band. The traditional dances performed that night were Tari Pendet from Bali, Tari Soyong and Tari Reog from East Java, and Tari Jaipong from West Java. We also had a contemporary dance which was collaborated with the gamelan, this dance was performed in remembrance of those who fell victim to the 2004 tsunami. In addition, the spontaneous performance by our Ambassador, His Excellency Mr. Primo Alui Joelianto, to much of the surprise and delight of the audience, struck up the guitar and vocal chords to the song Gembala Sapi.
We had a good turn out as most of the 350 seats were filled. The positive feedback from those who attended assured us that all the hard work that we put into the event did not go to waste. To conclude the night, audiences were treated to some Indonesian titbits such as Bakwan jagung, kerupuk, and kue dadar telur. This event would not be successful without the time and effort that the Indonesian community members and all the volunteers had put into it as well as the support from our sponsors.
